Last night I joined my fellow Family Guy aficionado Tim Spencer for the 8:15 PM screening of the movie Ted at the AMC Westminster Promenade.
First, entire outside of the theater was packed last night Every kiosk had 50+ in line and 200+ at the ticket window. Apparently America has a thing for teddy bears (Ted) and male strippers (Magic Mike). I used my cell while waiting in line to buy tickets and went to guest services to claim our tickets thus outsmarting the lines. Yeah, Tom.
The new self serve concession stand was a complete cluster. There was popcorn and soda spilled everywhere. It was pure chaos and the line for drinks was a disaster. But we still managed to get some movie snacks (Thanks Timmy).
Ted was f-ing brilliant. It was even more than I hoped or expected. Rarely do you sit through a movie where the entire theater laughs out loud twenty to thirty times. At points it was hard to hear the next line as so many were laughing at the last line. It was what you would expect from Seth MacFarlane if Family Guy was on HBO.
Please note: This film is NOT recommended for anyone who teddy bears in adult situations, hates crude humor, racial slurs, religious slurs, homophobic slurs, slurs in general, profanity, nudity, drug use, Boston accents, Nora Jones, hookers, Flash Gordon or Tiffany...which means Dale should NEVER, ever, ever see this movie.
The biggest surprise to me was that Ted the movie was not just crude jokes, but had a great story line, amazing CGI with the bear, good acting and was actually quite touching. Hats off to the brilliant and wicked mind of Seth MacFarlane for creating this gem.
If you only see one movie this year - go see Ted. If you are going to see two movies this year - go see Ted twice. You will laugh your ass off. I may go see it again too.

7 days left
Yes, although my actual birthday was June 22nd there are still 7 days left in the 40 Days & Nights of Tom.

A fun reminder
Dale bought me this little Mickey Vinylmation figurine while in Disney World. It is cute. I have it on my desk at work. It is a fun reminder of a great trip and the wonderful man who made my birthday so special.
Elvira made new friends
When I went to the parking lot near my office today, I thought it was funny that the two cars parked to the left of Elvira were also Mini Coppers. It was like she made new friends today.

Happy Tail
Here is a shot of Zoe with her bandaged up happy tail. Her tail sort of looks like a magician wand - our dog, Harry Potter. Even broken she still looks adorable.
Colorado continues to burn
The drive home was smoke filled. I can smell smoke from our house. Two new fires broke out in Boulder, CO. One is just over 20 miles from my neighborhood. We are on our fifth consecutive day over 100 degrees. Today was 105 degrees. The high temperatures are bringing high winds and lightning strikes. There are thousands of people evacuated already across the state. Thousands of acres have burned and hundreds of homes have already been lost. No snow or rain in February and March and a hot summer is destroying this state. There were over 250 lightning strikes today. There seems no relief in sight. It is very frightening.
What scares me jus as much is Independence Day is just a week away. Fireworks are illegal, but they need to ban ALL fireworks, including municipal and city displays. We cannot risk any more fires or loss. I love this country and love Independence Day, but I love our people, our lands, our homes and our safety even more. The risk from fireworks are too severe right now. Everything is too dry. All is takes is one spark and a house and entire neighborhood could be lost in minutes.
I beg everyone in Colorado reading this to find a safer way to celebrate Independence Day - go to a water park, have a picnic, see a movie or just be with friends. Be an example, especially to your children and please DO NOT set off fireworks. Even something that stays on the ground can spark a fire. The risk is too great. Also if your town is having fireworks, please encourage them to cancel this year's display. If you cannot understand why - walk outside and look at the smoke across the horizon.

Hit my stride
When I think of myself as 40, I often think of my parents at this same age. Does everyone else do this?
At 40 years old my parents were already grandparents to my niece Kristin and were watching me graduate from high school and start college. I think about how young they were when they had and raised my sister and I. It is a bit shocking. They faced so much, so early in life. It gives me such an appreciation of all they did for us.
As a kid, 40 years old seemed so far off. It felt so old to me. But at 40 years old, I do not feel like I am middle-aged. I feel like I have just hit my stride. I feel like I am in a good place in life. I do not feel old at all. I wonder if that is how my parents felt at 40 years old too?

The mouse ears are put away
Words will never sufficiently capture my love for Dale and my appreciation to him for planning my surprise trip to Orlando to celebrate my 40th birthday. It was one of the most loving and caring gift I have ever received in my life.
It was also the perfect gift for turning 40 - five days of magic, great friends, joy and acting like a kid. It will always be a special memory.
However as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and today it is back to real life. It is back to early morning dog feedings. It is back to counting calories. It is back to traffic. It is back to news of wildfires. It is back to record heat. It is back to work. It is back to responsibilities.
The mouse ears are put away and the dress pants are back on. But it is not sad. I have great memories and there are still 8 more days left on the 40 Days & Night of Tom...so there may be a few surprises and birthday wishes out there for me still.

Broken
My baby is broken. While we were in Orlando Zoe, our nine year old Old English Sheep Dog / Chinese Shar-pei mix broke her tail. Actually she split it open. Our dog/house sitter Katie came home to find blood everywhere and an injured Zoe. She did the smart thing and immediately took Zoe to our veterinarian. The diagnosis: Zoe has Happy Tail Syndrome.
Happy tail syndrome is also known as bleeding tail and splitting tail. Happy tail syndrome comes from your dog being happy and wagging their tail. As your dog wags its tail and bumps it into things like walls, tables or other hard inanimate objects it injures the tail. The harder the dog bangs it and the more often it gets hit the more damage done to the tail. Hard hitting on the tail can cause cuts, splits and other impact injuries that are painful and difficult to heal because of low blood circulation in the tail. If the tail is unable to heal or the injuries are continuous it could lead to amputation of the tail. Larger breeds are most often affected by this syndrome as they swing their tails harder than smaller breeds.
Zoe is a tail wagger and hits her tail hard on anything and everything. She can't resist. She is a happy dog and loves to show it. It is actually surprising it took nine years honestly to happen based on how much she wags.
We came home and her tail is bandaged and she is on antibiotics. She is in good spirits, but I still feel bad I was not here for her. Katie did a a superb job and we are incredibly thankful to her, but a princess like Zoe needs her two Dads.
Hopefully she heals quickly and has no complications. I think just seeing us tonight helped her a lot.

A little help from our friends
An extra day in Orlando due to a canceled flight caused a few inconveniences like the dogs being taken care of and getting a ride home from the airport.
However, it all worked out thanks to a little help from our friends.
Thanks to Katie LaMaster for staying an extra night at the house with our pups - Lucy and Zoe. You rock!
Thanks to Shannon Spencer for texting when she read of our canceled flight to see if we needed her to go let the dogs out. You and Tim are the best.
Thanks to Anjanette for saying yes with little notice to pick us up on Sunday when our flight was delayed. We appreciated the help.
Thanks to Shannon Stubbendick for picking us up from the airport today. It was incredibly kind on such a hot day to make the drive.
And finally thanks to Sandy Stubbendick, who took us to the airport last week and who was our original ride on Sunday. Thanks for helping us with a plan B and plan C.
It is so comforting to know we have so many caring, supportive friends in our lives and are there when we needed help. Dale and I are so grateful to you all. Thank you!

Family traits
Tonight I had a root beer in a frosted mug. I am not much of a soda drinker but a few times a year, especially a hot summer day like today, there is something delightful about an ice cold root beer.
Frosted mugs always make me smile because growing up I was never allowed to drink from a frosted mug. My Mom would always discourage it. Once my Mom got strep throat and the day before she had a soda from a frosted mug and was convinced the frosted mug was the cause of the strep.
Who knows...maybe it was the cause. It always sounded a bit irrational to me as a kid and I always mocked my Mom for saying frosted mugs caused strep throat, but it was what made my Mom such a character. I love it.
And let's not forget I am a person who does not eat berries because dog's pee on them. It seems irrational thoughts are a family trait.

A little guilty
Our (rescheduled) 9 AM flight from Denver to Tampa (originally from yesterday at 3:22 PM) was delayed again this morning. Apparently the part to fix the plane that they flew in from Chicago this morning did not work. For some people they were not just canceled on our afternoon flight at 3:20 PM but were originally on a flight to Denver that was canceled at 9:00 AM yesterday. They had spent the entire day at the airport (and most with small kids).
Yesterday when our flight was delayed (and looking like it would likely cancel) I called United Airlines to book Dale and I onto the 10:40 AM flight today as a back-up. I figured the more options the better.
At 9:30 AM when United Airlines announced there would not be another update on our 9:00 AM flight delay until 11:00 AM. I knew at this point, I needed to push the gate agent to assign us seats onto the 10:40 AM flight. And she did.
We were the only two from the 9:00 AM flight to get onto the 10:40 AM flight. That leaves hundreds of nice (but frustrated) people sitting stranded. Yes, we had to take middle seats, but they were seats and headed home.
The hard part for everyone is the lack of options. Tropical Storm Debbie has soaked Florida so all the airlines had delays yesterday and all flights are overbooked. The only way to get hundreds of people out will be to fix that plane or find a new plane. And I bought United Airlines has extra planes just sitting around.
One group is a group of 25 teens and 5 chaperones - that is a rescheduling nightmare. All these families have cranky, bored young kids, who are growing restless by the minute. I feel bad for these people and a little guilty that Dale and I were able to make an escape from the hell of gate 47.
It made me very happy this afternoon when I landed in Denver to see our original flight left Tampa 45 minutes after us. It was good those great families were all on their way home.

The difference between a great and good company
If there is one thing I hate more than anything it is poor service. I sit here this morning reflecting on yesterday's experiences with our flight home and I remain slightly disappointed with United Airlines. We had a mix of some great and just plain poor customer service.
I accept that things can (and often will) go wrong when you fly. It is bound to happen and with my bad travel luck, it tends to happen more than I would like (or appreciate). However, it is how an airline handles a bad situation that separates a great company from a good company. Yesterday, United Airlines could have shined and been that great company, but in the end (my opinion) they were only good and actually just mediocre.
Our United Airlines flight #296 from Denver to Tampa was delayed from a 3:22 PM departure to a 4:40 PM departure due to weather. We waited on our inbound plane to arrive from Washington, D.C. It was delayed due to Tropical Depression Debbie, who socked it to Florida with a day of high winds and non-stop rain.
Let me mention that naming a tropical storm Debbie seems odd. Debbie feels like a too casual or friendly of a name for a tropical storm. Debbie is your friend or a funny co-worker, not a tropical storm. I am not sure why but every time someone said Tropical Depression Debbie I pictured Debbie Reynolds in my head. However, it was more like Debbie Downer from Saturday Night Live I guess as she was not happy and sunny like Debbie Reynolds is on TV. All we needed was the wah wah horn like they do with Debbie Downer on Saturday Night Live in the background to make the day complete.
Okay...sorry about the Debbie Reynolds and Debbie Downer tangent.
The flight delay was in no way United Airlines fault as they cannot control the weather and I would rather see them delay a flight than fly in unsafe weather conditions. The delay was not horrible and the United Airlines gate agent assigned to Gate 46 was excellent. She did a great job of communicating status updates and keeping passengers informed of how it impacted those with connections in Denver. Once the plane arrived, she even stayed past her scheduled shift to make sure the plane was boarded quickly. She did an stellar job in a difficult situation. My hat goes off to her for her hard work and dedication.
We boarded our plane and I was impressed in how quickly everyone got in their seats. I fly often for business and it was the fastest and most efficient boarding I have ever witnessed, which is especially surprising since we were flying from Orlando on a flight full of kids.
Sadly a quick and efficient boarding could not help us when maintenance workers appeared in the cockpit. The Captain announced they were having computer issues and they were trying to resolve. After about 30 minutes the Captain announced they were unable to fix the issue and were going to restart the plane to reboot the computers. We all know rebooting is usually our last resort at home with our own computers and you could hear the collective sigh on the plane.
As you would guess, it did not work and 30 minutes later we were being asked to exit the plane. It was 5:30 PM and the only remaining Denver flight at 6:30 PM was full. A flight earlier in the day to Denver was canceled, so that did not help. You could feel a lot of tension in the gate area especially for those large families traveling. It is never easy when you have a gate full of passengers sitting and just waiting to hear if their flight will have 1) the plane fixed, 2) get a new plane, or 3) be canceled.
After about 45 minutes we were told by our new gate agent that our flight was canceled and they were scheduling the full flight into a new plane the next morning at 9:00 AM. This was good news of sorts as the next direct flight was at 10:40 AM and was fairly full. Everyone was instructed to head to baggage carousel #25 to pick up our bags and then go to the ticketing counter to pick up food and hotel vouchers. Since Dale and I did not check bags we headed directly to ticketing.
It was in the food and hotel voucher distribution where United Airlines fell down and failed in their customer service. First, was I appreciative they were giving food and hotel vouchers? Yes, of course - but I expected this since it was a mechanical issue and that is standard. What I expected when Dale and I reached the counter was an apology or at least some sympathy for the flight cancelation. We received neither. We were very friendly and nice, but the gentleman at the ticketing counter was less than friendly. He seemed more annoyed than we were after finding out we were not going home. Again, I can accept things go wrong and never fault the employees. A counter agent cannot control plane failures, but they do represent United Airlines and should be 1) courteous, 2) sympathetic, 3) helpful, and 4) apologetic.
The counter agent gave us food vouchers for dinner. Dale mentioned the gate agent had said there would be vouchers for dinner and breakfast and kindly asked if that was not the case. The ticketing agent never answered or acknowledged Dale, but instead printed two additional vouchers. Is it that difficult to communicate and answer someone? Apparently, yes.
The counter agent then printed our hotel voucher for the Renaissance Marriott and told us where to catch the shuttle. We asked if the food vouchers were just good at the airport or the hotel too. The counter agent responded by saying sometimes yes, sometimes no and that it depends on the hotel. Of course our next question was whether the vouchers worked at the Renaissance Marriott. His answer was that he had no idea and he said we should just eat at the airport if we were hungry.
This is not a good way to treat customers who are already stressed due to a delay and being sent to an unfamiliar hotel they did not select. These agents need to try to better relate to their passengers. How would they feel after being in the airport for hours of delays and the eventual cancellation of a flight? We planned to be heading home. We now had to figure out things like changing work meetings and care for our dogs, but other people probably had a much larger list of calls and plans to make.
These counter agents should be equipped with information to provide a better experience for customers. The airports use the same hotels - why not create a one sheeter about the hotel you are being assigned? Do they have a restaurant? When does it normally stop serving? Do they accept food vouchers? When does their shuttle service run daily and how often does it run in the morning?
Everyone standing at the counter had these same questions, yet all you heard across the counter were the I have no idea responses. We asked if they needed new boarding passes for the morning. We were told probably not but they were unsure. They could not print new ones so they assumed TSA would be notified to accept the old ones even though the date would be wrong, but nobody really knew if this would be the case or not.
Even this morning when we got to the airport our flight was not listed on the monitors so we had to go ask at the counter what gate to proceed to. We were told it was a ghost flight so it is not on the monitors and they could not add it as if we should know or expect this. United Airlines needs to remember that air travel is not our industry and the general public will not know these things. It is these little annoyances that add up.
To me United Airlines counter agents need to be put in a passenger's shoes. With an hour left on their shifts tell all the counter agents that instead of going home after work as expected they are being sent to a hotel for the night. What do they want to know? What questions do they have? I bet they would have quite a few and be bothered with a response of I have no idea.
To me, the real hero last night was the Renaissance Marriott by the Orlando Airport. They provided stellar service that United Airlines could have provided. Oddly, they also provided the apology that United Airlines never gave. When we boarded the shuttle, the driver said he was sorry that everyone was not heading home as they expected but he would get us to the hotel quickly and safely, as he was sure everyone was tired.
The woman at the front desk immediately apologized when she saw our hotel voucher that our flight was canceled and asked what happened. She apologized we were not making it home and said treated us with kindness and compassion. She explained when the hotel restaurant/bar closed and when breakfast would start the next morning without us even having to ask. She asked what time we had our flight the next day and gave a recommendation of what time to meet for the hotel shuttle. I assume these are the common questions from customers with hotel vouchers, so rather than wait to be asked, she gave great service and was proactive. Way to go to the Renaissance Marriott for making a guess feel valued and appreciated.
I fly often from work and have Premier status with United Airlines. I have a lot of options when flying but have always been loyal to United Airlines. Yesterday was an opportunity for United Airlines to show itself as a great company but sadly even though the gate agent was stellar it could not make up for the less than helpful counter agent, who really did not seem to care. It was disappointing to see. In an industry with little that distinguishes their product it will always be service that allows an airline to shine.

Now more than ever
It's early. I am tired. I am a bit burned out from yesterday's day at the airport with delays, cancelations, lines, shuttles and finally being sent to a hotel for the night. I did not sleep well.
I could not imagine this for those with small kids as I cranky myself.
I need to get moving, shower, eat breakfast and catch shuttle back to airport to try this all over again.
Thank goodness for Dale's sunny disposition because I need it now more than ever.

Day 5: Orlando
Today can best be described as unexpected. We arrived at the airport for our flights - Rob and Scott to Cleveland and Dale and I to Denver. However Tropical Depression Debbie had an idea all her own and kept Orlando under a huge rainstorm delaying flights in and out.
Rob and Scott made it out after a small delay. Dale and I faced a longer delay but eventually boarded. Well that did not last long. After we all boarded we were all taken back off the plane due to some mechanical issues.
After a little bit, the flight was canceled and rescheduled for tomorrow. We are now in a hotel for the night and tomorrow we will try to leave Orlando (again). It could be much worse. They could have kept us waiting in the terminal for hours with tired, unhappy children while they tried to fix the plane. Instead...Dale and I are in a nice hotel with some sandwiches, plus our dogs are safe with Katie for another night.
All is okay and tomorrow is another day.

Something Dale probably did not plan
One of the nicest parts of my trip to Disney World was something Dale probably did not plan - memories of my Mom.
I had been to Disney with my Mom and my family four times before she passed in 2003. A lot of my favorite memories of my Mom involve Disney World. Being here this week was a great reminder of those memories and the love, spirit and joy that embodied my Mom.
My Mom loved all things Disney. My Mom loved her family and to her Disney World was the ultimate family vacation. My Mom was not wealthy growing up and she and my Dad both worked incredibly hard to provide for my sister and I. They could not afford Disney vacations when I was a kid. By the time my parents became grandparents to my nieces and nephew, they were comfortable financially and could finally afford to take the entire family to Disney World and Disneyland.
Looking back now I realize to my Mom Disney World represented more than just a vacation. I think it meant she finally reached a place she always hoped to be in her life. A trip to Disney World was something my parents always wished they could have given me and my sister as kids - a magical vacation. I know being able to provide that for their grandchildren made them incredibly proud and happy. She and my Dad were able to give their grandchildren something very special. I was fortunate to be a part of that several times.
Being in the Disney World Parks this week brought back a flood of great memories of my Mom, my Dad, sister, nieces and nephew. It was a great gift to receive as I turned 40. I miss my Mom a lot, so in a way being in Disney World felt like she shared my 40th birthday with me in her own way.
My thanks to Dale for bringing memories of my Mom to my birthday. As always he surprises me in ways I would never expect. She would have loved him!

Thanks Rob and Scott
A huge thanks to my friends Rob Sansom and Scott Ashley, who came to Disney World to celebrate my birthday with Dale and I. It was a true honor (and wonderful surprise) to have them be a part of the celebration.
It was incredibly humbling that they took time from their jobs, life, friends home and pups to fly down to Orlando to celebrate my 40th. We all only get so many vacation days each year and each only have so much money to go towards these types of trips, so it was so generous of them to do this for me.
Plus they put up with a big goofball like me in Mickey ears walking around Disney with a huge "Happy Birthday Tom" button for 3 days. Honestly, they made the entire trip all about me and my birthday - very few people would ever do that.
I am blessed to have such amazing friends, who are willing to do that for me. Words will never properly express the love I feel for those two gentleman. I have known them for over a decade and they truly are two of my favorite people in this world and they have always been there for me.
Thanks Rob and Scott for being you and making my 40th something I will never forget. I am so lucky to call you my best friends. All my love!

Better karma while flying
I am always nice to the flight crew when I travel. I say hello when I board. I sincerely say thank you when I exit. I order water when I get a beverage and rarely require any extra attention. You would think based on this I would have better flying karma - yet here I sit at another airport delayed. But I guess the airlines cannot be blamed for weather delays, right?
Magical
I snapped a bunch of photos last night of Cinderella's Castle during the fireworks display. It is so magical.
A 40th birthday that I will never forget
I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate my 40th birthday than at Disney World. It was great to be a kid again.
I was able to wear mouse ears embroidered with my name. I was able to laugh, joke and smile with dear friends. I was able to ride the rides like Big Thunder Mountain, Spaceship Earth and It's A Small World. I was able to see shows like Captain EO and Muppet 3D Vision. I was able to travel to countries in Epcot like England, Japan, Germany and China. I was able to stare in awe at Cinderella's Castle as it magically transformed and changed colors. I was able to see the Disney characters I grew up with and still love. I had well over 100 Disney Cast Members say, "Happy Birthday Tom." I was spoiled with ice cream treats, birthday cakes and delicious meals. I had pixie dust sprinkled in my hair.
But the most magical part happened last night during the fireworks at Magic Kingdom when the man I love turned to me and whispered to me, "Happy Birthday, baby."
Dale created a birthday that far exceeded anything I could have wanted, expected or deserved. His love is truly the best gift.
Thank you Dale for making my 40th birthday something I will never forget.
