Colorado continues to burn

The drive home was smoke filled. I can smell smoke from our house. Two new fires broke out in Boulder, CO. One is just over 20 miles from my neighborhood. We are on our fifth consecutive day over 100 degrees. Today was 105 degrees. The high temperatures are bringing high winds and lightning strikes. There are thousands of people evacuated already across the state. Thousands of acres have burned and hundreds of homes have already been lost. No snow or rain in February and March and a hot summer is destroying this state. There were over 250 lightning strikes today. There seems no relief in sight. It is very frightening.

What scares me jus as much is Independence Day is just a week away. Fireworks are illegal, but they need to ban ALL fireworks, including municipal and city displays. We cannot risk any more fires or loss. I love this country and love Independence Day, but I love our people, our lands, our homes and our safety even more. The risk from fireworks are too severe right now. Everything is too dry. All is takes is one spark and a house and entire neighborhood could be lost in minutes.

I beg everyone in Colorado reading this to find a safer way to celebrate Independence Day - go to a water park, have a picnic, see a movie or just be with friends. Be an example, especially to your children and please DO NOT set off fireworks. Even something that stays on the ground can spark a fire. The risk is too great. Also if your town is having fireworks, please encourage them to cancel this year's display. If you cannot understand why - walk outside and look at the smoke across the horizon.
