I find it shocking

The two woman in front of me on my bus home are (as usual) sitting and gossiping. They do this every time they ride together. It is hard not to overhear their conversation since they talk so damn loud. Anyhow, they reached the subject of the one woman's daughter and her new boyfriend. The woman said she did not like the boyfriend and hope her daughter wised up. The other woman asked why? She responded and I quote, "Well for starters he's black." And then she stopped, turned around (apparently to look to see who heard or is black) and gave me an awkward smile. She then proceeded to discuss how she and I quote again, "I do not trust those kind of people."

I find it shocking the level of discrimination that still exists in our society and my neighborhood for that matter. So sad. Part of me thought about saying something but this woman has been on my bus for two years and based on the ignorance that comes out of her mouth time and time again, I know there is no changing her. You may remember this is the same woman who saw the movie The Help and said to her friend 1) how fortunate people were to get help for $1.75 per hour and 2) smoke anywhere they wanted.

The people on the bus go...

...down. And hard.

I was just on the 16th Street Mall shuttle when some guy stepped right in front of our bus. Fortunately the driver reacted quickly and slammed on the brakes. He hit the guy, but not hard enough to knock him down.

Unfortunately the bus was packed and it sent about twenty people to the floor. Even worse there was a woman with a baby in a stroller on the bus and several people fell on top of him/her. The baby was screaming and everyone felt horrible. Overall, the baby seemed okay...just very scared. It was horrible to see so many people fall. It looked like one woman sprained her wrist based on how she landed and another woman cut her forehead on something (perhaps the stroller). It illustrated the whole theory a body in motion stays in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. You would think a bus traveling 5 miles per hour would not cause such force, but when you are standing and not or barely holding onto anything and suddenly stop, you keep going.

Oddly I rarely sit on the bus and rarely hold onto the straps or rails to avoid germs, however today a seat opened behind me and I took it half way on my trip. I am really thankful I did as I am sure I would have fell.

Hate Facebook's Top Stories

Do you hate Facebook's recent change that shows Top Stories at the top of your feed? I have seen a bunch of people complain about this on Facebook. Even a few have commented that my posts fill up their Top Stories. I am not sure how this is a problem. But there is a 5 minute workaround that does NOT involve un-friending me.

Here is what you do:

Set up a new list (see lists in left rail). Name the list "everyone" or "all" and assign all of your Facebook friends to this list. You have to click each person once the pop-up opens, but it will take less than 5 minutes for about 500 friends. Then, click this list on Facebook or on your Facebook phone app and you will see all updates like you used to (most recent on top) without Facebook deciding what is important for you to read first.

Why doesn't Facebook just set an option in account settings? Something like this:

Select News Feed View

1. Top Stories followed by Most Recent
2. Most Recent

It would make everyone happy and give options. I should call Mark Zuckerburg to discuss.

The morning news

Dale asked this morning if I needed a coat. I said no since it was 55 degrees and I would be fine. I was wrong. It was chilly waiting for the bus. Dale was right.

I am wearing my new glasses today. I hate my new contacts as eyes feel extremely dry. Thankfully they are only samples. I am going back to my old brand of contacts. I still have some of the old ones, but figured I would give my eyes some rest today. They work so hard.

I am on the bus to work. They are canceling my bus route at the end of the year, so I will need to catch a bus at the Westminster Park & Ride or drive to work.

I need to get hustling on my making Halloween costume, preparing for the Halloween party, the Zombie Crawl, our Haunted House outing, decorating for Halloween, making Halloween treats and all other things Halloween. This holiday is exhausting.

I have been listening to the Go-Go's this morning. Fun music. We got the beat...yeah! We got it.

Lots to do and get done at work today. But that is the norm for most of us, huh?

Off to play Word with Friends. I have been delinquent.

More from last night

Here are a few more photos from last night at dinner at Linger with Sandy and Steve Stubbendick and Steve's adorable parents - Ed and Bonnie.

Another excellent night

Tonight we went to Linger Eatuaries for dinner. It is located in the old Olinger Mortuaries. Yes a funeral home.

Good food, amazing views and great friends. Another excellent night, plus we got to meet the folks who created Steve Stubbendick, so that was pretty cool.

Beautiful views

The views are beautiful from the roof of Linger looking downtown.

Few things as good as

There are few things as good after a long day at work than Mexican food and margaritas with friends followed by ice cream at Little Man. Add in a car ride home with the windows open, fresh autumn air and good music on the radio and you have one happy Tom.

My thanks to Dale, Sandy, Steve, Tammy, the staff at Las Pasadita Inn, the staff at Little Man Ice Cream and my car, Elvira - you all made for a wonderful evening.

No cavities!

I went to the Dentist this morning for my cleaning and check up. I have no cavities! Sweet. However, my gums are slightly inflamed, so I need to go back in three months. So I guess a little good and a little bad.

I also like to photograph myself while at the Dentist. Not sure why...I just love how I look in a bib.

My new favorite song

I know this song is several years old, but I just heard it for the first time last week and it has quickly grown to become my favorite new song. It just truly sums up how you feel sometimes and definitely not appropriate for children.

Onto October and all things Halloween

We are in the final week of September, which seems bizarre. Where did this month go? Well, onto October and all things Halloween, right?

Speaking of Halloween...I figured out what I am going to do for my Halloween costume, which makes me happy. Or at least I think I have. I need to pull it all together.

Dale and I also decided how we are decorating for Halloween this year outside. It is different than last year and is a mix between harvest and Halloween, which should be cool. We will see if it turns out as expected. It is very Martha Stewart-esque.

We are up to just over 50 yes RSVPs for the Halloween party and we need to get moving on final planning as it is only a few weeks away at October 15th. Ugh. Too much to do.

Dale and I also figured out what we are wearing to the Denver Zombie Crawl on October 15th. We are going as Zombie Bowlers, which we think will be funny...with some body parts in our bowling bags.

Well, off to work.

Momma Tom's Homestyle Crock Pot Beef Stew Served Over Rice

Today I made beef stew in the crock pot and let it slow cook in the crock pot, while we went to the movies. We just had it for dinner and I think it came out great. It is a nice autumn recipe - hearty and hot. It would have been better if today was not 80 degrees, but oh well...nothing is perfect.

Here is the recipe in case you want to give it a try:

Ingredients

2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 onion, chopped
1 1/2 cups beef broth
3 potatoes, diced
4 carrots, sliced
1 stalk celery, chopped

Directions

Place meat in slow cooker. In a small bowl mix together the flour, salt, and pepper; pour over meat and stir to coat meat with flour mixture. Stir in the garlic, bay leaf, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, onion, beef broth, potatoes, carrots, and celery. Cover and cook on low setting for 10 to 12 hours or on high setting for 4 to 6 hours. If you like, serve over a bed of rice. Eat.

Contagion

The movie club I belong met today and saw the movie Contagion. Great movie and very realistic. As a result, I will no longer be leaving the house and have ordered a bubble for Dale and I to live in.

If you have not seen the movie, check it out. It is worth it, but bring the hand sanitizer. For those whole do not plan to see it, I will tell you the ending:

SPOILER ALERT: Gwyneth Paltrow destroys the world (as I always expected she would).

I should be...

...sleeping, but I am awake. It is 6:29 AM on a Sunday. We really need to teach our dog Zoe two things:

1. Weekends versus weekdays
2. How to fill her dog bowl

Okay, and while were at it:

3. How to fetch my slippers.

Apple-tastic

Today was just plain apple-tastic. Dale and I joined our friend Judy Wodell and headed north for apple picking at YaYa's Farm & Orchard in Longmont, CO. One of the things I miss most from back east is apple picking. Colorado has tons of amazing things, but apple picking is not one of them.

YaYa's was cool although due to a poor season they are not allowing picking as all the apples have already been picked by the farm. However, our friend Judy knew a friend of the owner, so Judy, Dale and I were allowed to pick from the few remaining unpicked trees, which was cool. They also run a farmers market, so Dale and I came home with:

Apples (three types)
Apple salsa
Apple butter
Apple donuts
Apple cherry pie
Apple cider

We even got to go in their barn and pet their four week old horse named JJ. Her and her Mom, Lillie were incredibly sweet. Well, except that Lillie sneezed all over my shirt not once but three times.

We even stopped at another farm stand on the way home for:

Pumpkin bread
Corn caramel chunks
Corn on the cob
Homemade soap
Fresh chilies

After that we hit a street fair in Longmont and lunch at Two Dog Diner.

It was a terrific afternoon that made you love all things autumn.

Damn, I must be getting old

I got an advertisement for hearing aides. What the hell, I'm only 39.

One year ago today

It was one year ago today that our dog Millie passed away unexpectantly. It was horrible. I can still remember Dale's call that Millie was suddenly not moving and barely breathing. He rushed her to the vet's office, but she was gone by the time he got there. Even if he did get her there, there was nothing they could have done. She basically bled out. A tumor had developed in her stomach and basically ruptured her stomach causing her to bleed internally. The fortunate thing was that she was in no pain and passed with Dale by her side. I blogged about it last year in a post titled A Sad Thursday. Looking back, I should have titled it A Devestating Thursday would have been more appropriate.

It has been an incredible loss as she was our peanut and in many ways our baby. Zoe is such an independent dog and Millie was the exact opposite. She was the one who you had to keep your eye on and in many ways baby. I miss her every day and cannot imagine what Dale has felt this past year as they were inseparable.

I blogged about all the special little things we loved about Millie last year in a post titled Remembering Millie. It was good to read that post again today and think of our little girl.

Inspiring and frightening at the same time

Last night, Dale and I joined our friends Sandy and Steve Stubbendick for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk in Wash Park. The event was packed, which was both inspiring and frightening at the same time.

It was inspiring to see so many people giving their time, raise funds for research, build awareness and support friends, families and loved ones who have or are battling cancer. However at the same time, it was frightening and sad to see so many people impacted by cancer.

For those unfamiliar with the walk, everyone was at night with a balloon light by a light inside the mouth of the balloon. It is an incredible visual as you see a sea of red balloons (supporters), yellow balloons (in memory of) and white balloons (survivors). Everyone walks around the outer loop of Wash Park. The group was so large by the time the last people were starting, the first people were 1/2 way around Wash Park. It was incredible to see, but a sad reminder how many people locally are touched by cancer.

I was so honored to attend this event and incredibly thankful to those who sponsored Dale and I by donating to the Walk. Together, we raised $346.54 in a week. A huge thanks to Stephanie Baker, Becki & Dilworth, Nell Herman & Family, Karen Weamer, Judy Wodell and Christy & Mark Yeaman for your generosity and most of all love in helping us. We truly appreciate your support.

Dale and I were on a team with the clinic Dale received treatment and combined the team raised an impressive $8,939.40. During the ceremony they even recognized a 15 year old girl there, who had raised an amazing $55,000 on her own. Isn't that incredible?

While walking around last night I passed two little girls maybe 3 or 4 carrying their balloons and they wore stickers that read, "Walking for Daddy". I saw their Dad, who was frail, bald and being pushed in a wheel chair. He was obviously in treatment. It was incredibly sad to see, but very inspiring to see so many of his family and friends rallied around him. You could see and feel the love and support. There were thousands of those stories all around us. Some like Dale's story that ended well, others like this man's who are not yet finished and some whose story ended sadly.

Last night made me think a lot about Dale and his own battle with cancer. Seeing him carry his white survivor balloon made me so proud. I am so proud of the fight he fought and how far he has come in three years. He went through so much pain and suffering but did it with a positive and winning attitude. Dale will forever be my hero.

I will always be in debt to the staff at the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute (formerly Rocky Mountain Cancer Center Denver), Dr. Mark Brunvand and Sandy Stubbendick as their care truly saved Dale's life. They gave so much more than just medical treatment. They gave themselves, their hearts and love. They are incredible people, who change lives every day.

And our friends, family, neighbors and co-workers, who were there when we needed them most...I will always be incredibly thankful for all that you did.

It was a good night that brought back a lot of memories but a great reminder the fight cannot end until we find a cure for cancer. Again, my thanks to all our sponsors.

As you could imagine

I am a lover of Glee. The show is fun and I love the music. As you can imagine I was excited for last night's premiere of season 3. However, to me the episode felt disconnected and flat. The story lines and music felt all over the board. I hope that it is not a sign of things to come. My thoughts:

1. I like the idea of a disenchanted Quinn storyline, but if you are going to do a disenchanted Quinn storyline how about you show Quinn for more than 12 seconds. I vote Quinn starts a girl rock band called Quinn & the Skanks.

2. The Emma won't have sex storyline is growing old. Either have her and Will in a real relationship or move on.

3. I am glad Sam is gone.

4. Is Santana a lesbian or not? They say she is but she always is shown lusting after every guy. At least make her bi and have her go after everyone. It seems awkward to have her flirting with every guy one second and saying she is gay the next.

5. I like that we will get more Blaine but put him in a scene with more than just Kurt. I do like his polo shirt with bow tie look.

6. I am not happy they are not using Lauren this season in Glee and basically wrote her off.

7. I am a bit over Sue Sylvester. She has become too cartoonish.

8. You give Mercedes a boyfriend and then barely show him.

Okay, that is my two cents and if Ryan Murphy would like to hire me as a script consultant, I would consider it.

Also, yes I know it is sad a 39 year old man is blogging about Glee.

A bit darker

I am struggling this week as the mornings seem a bit darker and a bit colder. I leave the house at 5:40 AM and there are no signs of sunrise. The stars and street lights illuminate my path. I am not someone who does well without the sun in the morning. By the time the sun is up, I am pretty much at work. Maybe I need my own sunlamp with a really long extension cord.

Like a painting

Dale and I took Zoe for a walk after dinner. The skies over Arvada were beautiful. They looked like a painting.

And so it begins

I went to the gym this morning before work. I did 60 minutes on the elliptical. I hate the gym but it felt good. I also did a descent job reducing my calories and increasing water intake so far today, which is good.

I plan to do it all again tomorrow. I need to lose the extra pounds I packed on before winter arrives and I start hibernating. Wish me luck!

Found: Pair of Woman's Glasses

Dale found these women's glasses under the back seat of our truck. I have asked everyone I can think of who has been in our truck, but no luck. I figured I would post a picture here, in case someone who reads my blog (and has been in our truck) is missing them.

If nobody claims them, I can only assume one of three two things:

  1. Dale is actually bi and they belong to his girlfriend.
  2. Dale is gay, but secretly seeing a drag queen with poor vision on the side.
  3. Dale is actually a secret drag queen and these are his.
If they are yours, let me know as I would love to return them to their rightful owner. Or at least a woman who wants free eye wear.

I was right

This morning while waiting for the bus, I stared at the stars against the dark sky. I looked at the constellations of Orion, the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper.

I took astronomy for a semester in college and this morning realized the same three constellations I could recognize before that astronomy class are the same three constellations I can recognize today.

So when I was dragging my ass to astronomy lab at night freshman year across campus in the cold to look at constellations all those years ago and I felt I was completely wasting my time on my science requirement, I was right.

It feels good to be validated 21 years later. Now you could argue that I may be able recognize more constellations today, if I had taken that class more serious, but that would not validate my ego as much as just saying I was right.

Great guy, incredible Dad, good friend

Tonight we celebrated my friend Tim Spencer's birthday.
He is a great guy.
Incredible Dad.
Good friend.
I am glad we could meet to honor him.
Dale made a peach pie.
Everyone loved it.
I do not eat the peach.
Sandy Stubbendick made a Butterfinger pie.
It was delicious.
I had two pieces.
It was a fun evening.
It is the small gatherings like tonight that remind me how blessed I am.
With great friends.

Pie-tastic

Here is a picture of the three pies created today. The top two are peach pies and the bottom is a rhubarb pie. They look great and this evening we will find out how they taste.

Circus peanuts, memories and smiles

Dale and I were in the local ranch wear store (yes, we have a local ranch wear store...we live in Colorado after all) on Saturday and I saw something that made me smile (no not a hot cowboy, although that would have made me smile).

Anywho, I saw a bag of circus peanuts. My Mom loved these and always bought them when she saw them. They always were a very odd candy to me and not a favorite...but I had to snap a photo and share here as a salute to my Mom.

Exhausted

I took Zoe to the West Arvada Dog Park today. She ran, she played and sniffed plenty of butts. She had a great time. She is now home and exhausted. It is not being 8 years old as it looks.

It has to be about someone else other than ourselves

Sometimes we all face times in our lives when we realize it has to be about someone else other than ourselves. Last night was one of those times and I am happy to report I met the challenge. Last night, I gave of myself to help my deal friend Sandy. Last night, I let my friend Sandy beat me at bowling.

Let me explain...Sandy and I tend to be a little competitive. We like to egg the other when it comes to competitions like board games and yes, even bowling. Last night, Sandy and I went bowling with her husband, Steve and the man Colorado will not allow me to legal marry, Dale (that is a whole other story). We all felt it would be a fun way to spend a Saturday night - a little bowling and a little beer.

First we all went to Brothers BBQ for some dinner and hit Fat Cats Bowling around 7:00 PM. Soon after we arrived, Sandy asked if there was going to be a bet between her and I. Earlier in the evening, we had all debated between fish & chips or barbecue for dinner, so since we had barbecue, we felt the loser buying the winner a fish & chips dinner seemed like a worthy prize.  The competition was quickly underway.

I took the first game by 13 pins with 120 to Sandy's 107. Win two games, it was going to be tough for Sandy to come back and beat me as my balls were very mighty in game #1 (or that is what I liked to tell myself). It was about the 4th frame of game #2 that I decided that I needed to sacrifice my own competitive nature for my dear friend Sandy. I sat listening to her talk and it was obvious Sandy was in a low, dark place and needed a win.  I mean it was obvious as a lot of her conversations were about a tough work week. Add to that the fact that both her daughters had moved away and don't even get me started on all the Loretta drama. It was clear I had one sad Sandy on my hands.

Being the caring, giving, selfless individual I am, it was right then and there I decided that Sandy needed to win that little bowling game and our bet. She needed a win after a few tough months. It had to be about Sandy. It could not be about me. I had to throw the game and that is what I did. It was easier than I expected. I threw a few gutter balls and did not pick up some spares. My decline brought Sandy to life. She was suddenly on fire. She was smiling, throwing strikes and quickly was in reach of not only winning game #2...but winning the most pins for the night and a fish & chips dinner.

The last few frames were fully of excitement and I am happy to report, Sandy beat me game #2 by 26 pins with a score of 121 to my 95. This also meant for the night she finished at 228 to my 215. She won by 13 points, but I was the true winner as I gave Sandy the victory she needed. She was so happy and her smile was my reward. I am very proud of myself. As it is times like this that tests the...

...okay, I can't do it. I can't continue this. Okay, I did not let her win. Sandy was not depressed and has not have a few bad months. I made all that up. She kicked my ass (again) in bowling and now I have to buy her fish and chips. However, my story sounds so much better, don't you think? Congratulations to Sandy for winning last night. She had two strikes in a row and after I lead most of game #2 killed it. But I plan to start practicing and I am going to win next time.

Thoughts of a funeral

This week I was thinking what I would prefer for my funeral when I die someday. I am not sure why, but sometimes the idea of my own passing pops into my head. Do other people ever think of their own funeral? It is weird?

Thomas William Whittaker, Jr.
June 22, 1972 - ???

I hope I pass in the autumn as it is my favorite time of year and I would like my funeral to be on a beautiful, sunny but cool autumn day.  I want leaves to be blowing on the ground. I am not a religious person, but I think I want my service in a non-denomination church.

Here are the three songs I want played at my funeral:

Song #1 - You by Jim Brickman and Jane Karakowski

This is mine and Dale's song and since Dale has been the most important part of my life, I want our song to be one of the final songs played for me.

Song #2 - What Matters by Randi Driscoll

I love this song. It was always spoken to me and from the moment I first head it, I felt a connection. It was written for Matthew Shepard and I think speaks for every gay person, in that we are no different.

Song #3 - No Day But Today by Idina Menzel

The music of RENT has always inspired and comforted me. This song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and this version is exceptional.

I would like Dale to be dressed in a simple dark grey suit (not black). I would also like him to throw himself on the ground and start wailing during this last song with cries of "No, not Tom!"  Just kidding...okay not really...I expect a lot of sadness that day and how can I live without you.

I want to be cremated and kept in an urn in our house until Dale passes as well. At that point, I want our ashes to be put at rest together or my ashes buried with him. I want to be with him forever.

So there you have it - autumn, non-denominational church, three songs and lots of crying.

Date #14 - Boobs

Yes, you read that right...boobs. For mine and Dale's fourteenth date of the year, I gave him the gift of boobs and lots of them. On Friday night, I treated Dale to an evening of cabaret at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret in downtown Denver. In particular we saw the show Ladies of the 80's. It was a great time.

The evening started out with dinner at BD's Mongolian BBQ also in downtown Denver, which is a favorite of Dale's. He loves the place...mostly because you get to pick all the food you want in your meal personally. That means one thing for Dale - lots of shrimp. We were joined by our friends Sandy and Steve. We all had a great meal on the patio. Steve and I enjoyed a few long island ice teas, which Sandy and Dale took part in the peach sangria. By the time we headed to Lannie's Clocktower, we were already feeling very festive.

The Ladies of the 80's was a great show. They kicked off the night by warming up the audience with some 80's trivia, which I kicked ass at. The show was a series of dancing and comedy set against fun music of the 80s. It was a great show and although the girls got topless, they wore pasties and it was all done very tastefully.  They also had some guys in a few numbers, which they called boylesque, which made it fun for the gals and gays in the audience too.

After the show, we dashed over the Osteria Marco restaurant before they stopped serving at 11 PM for some butterscotch bread pudding, which we all love. It was the perfect way to top off the night.

It was a great evening with good friends, lots of boobs, but best of all it was with Dale.

I suspect she's had work done

Our little girl has grown up so fast. Today, Zoe is 8 years old. Can you believe it? I know she hardly looks a day over 6. But I suspect she's had work done - nothing major, just a little Botox here or there. I have no proof but I find it suspicious she is 1/2 Shar-pei and has no wrinkles. Just saying.

Happy birthday, Zoe! I hope you have many, many happy returns.

America first???

Last night Dale and I had a chat about vacations for next year and where we should go. We have talked for quite a while about going to Germany next year. We have not been to Europe since 2008 and we loved our two previous European vacations.

As much as I love Europe and would be excited to visit Germany, which I have never been before, there is a part of me that wants to do a USA based vacation next year to help keep the money we would spend in our own struggling economy. Now I am realistic that what we spend on a vacation is not going to transform our economy, but I do think as Americans we all need to do what we can to help each other. I personally would prefer helping hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions within our own borders with our money.

It is not that I have anything against Germany or Europe, but we have so many Americans out of work or struggling here. If every American who vacations overseas yearly vacations in the United States instead next year, what would that do for our economy? Part of me feels we need to start putting America first with a focus on buying and spending American.

Am I being naive? Silly? I understand there is also the global economy and we like tourists to come here from other countries too...so there is this whole reciprocal thing that exists but I do not know. I just think of the family in Boston forced to close their boat tour business due to a sluggish economy or the San Francisco restaurant owners facing hard times. There are so many incredible sights here, do I need to go outside our borders next year? I don't know.

There is also a part of me that feels we save Europe for 2013, which will be mine and Dale's 10 year anniversary, my 40th birthday and the 10 year anniversary of Dale's 40th birthday.

I guess there are a lot worse problems than saying I can't decide where to vacation, right? As I type this, I hope people are not thinking what an ass. I wish I even got a vacation.

I just do not want to feel like I am contributing to our bad economy and high unemployment.

Not my favorite dream

Woke up last night from a dream that involved someone vomiting on me at a restaurant. Yes, it involved projectile and I was completely covered.

Let's hope all my dreams DO NOT come true because it was by far not my favorite dream.

What happened to autumn?

It feels like we went right from summer to winter. What happened to autumn? Come back!

Dale, Carol Burnett and the creator of the grilled cheese sandwich

I think today's cool weather put me in a bit of a bad mood. The skies were grey, it rained and it felt more like the start of winter than autumn with a high of 55 degrees. It also felt like the work day dragged on a bit...but that may have been due to my mood more than anything else. The end result was I headed home feeling pretty negative.

But Dale being the amazing partner he is made the perfect cold weather dinner - grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I spent the evening with him. He watched TV and I read a fun, light book in Carol Burnett's This Time Together. Those things combined have turned what probably would have ended as bad day, a good day. I feel like I am now in a much better place.

It is amazing what a good meal, good man and good book can do to lift your spirits. My thanks to Dale, Carol Burnett and the creator of the grilled cheese sandwich.

Laughter and Reflection

I just finished Carol Burnett's 2010 book, This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection. I started it this morning on the bus ride to work, continued it on the bus ride home and finished it after dinner. It was a great read.

It is basically Carol telling anecdotes from her career from her start on Broadway, to her variety show, to life in Hollywood and late career touring. It is a fun, light read that had me laughing out loud chapter after chapter.

I grew up watching the Carol Burnett Show and this book was a great reminder of how great of a comedian Carol Burnett truly is. Not only can she perform on stage but she is a good, comedic writer too, who tells a damn funny story.

Take this chapter titled Fans:

Recently, I was in the market and a woman came up to me and said, "Excuse me, but aren't you Carol Burnett?"

I smiled and said, "Yes, I am."

"I knew it! I just knew it was you! Do you know how I could tell?"

"No..."

"By your face."

Too funny and I love that she made that little anecdote a whole chapter.

Great book. If it like Carol Burnett, it is a must read.

Only Wednesday

I am lying in bed and cannot seem to motivate myself to get up and start my day. It is only Wednesday and I am exhausted.

Can you please help us with the Light the Night Walk?

It is very last minute, but Dale and I have decided to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk here in Denver next week.

As most of you who read this blog regularly, Dale is a lymphoma survivor and it is through the funding for research from organizations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that Dale is alive today. We have joined the team for Dale's clinic, which is the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute (CSCI) and is an amazing group of caring and kind individuals.  I feel this will be a wonderful way to not only honor Dale's fight, but also the fights of thousands of others, who are fighting today.

We are each trying to raise $100 and we would appreciate any donation.

Thank for you for your love and support.

I had no idea

My friend Mark Stearns sent me a link to Boston.com's coverage of the droughts and wild fires in Texas. I had no idea how bad things were in Texas. It is horrifying. Here are a few of the photos, but go to the actual page on Boston.com as they have captions for all the photos that are just as shocking.

Last night I cheated

Yes, I am a cheater. I never really thought I would be one of those guys who cheats but there is no denying it. I feel the best thing I can do now is just be honest and open about my discretion, in the hopes of moving forward. At approximately 8:40 PM last night I gave into temptation and crossed a line, I never expected I would ever cross. I was weak and I cheated. It is that simple. I am a weak man. Last night, I betrayed my beloved Smart Cow Yogurt Bar and went to newly opened Yogurtland. It feels better just saying it out loud.

The evening started out simple. Dale and I joined our friend, Sandy Stubbendick for dinner at Tea Garden. We arrived at 6:30 PM only to find they are closed on Mondays. Still craving Chinese food, we all headed to Rose Garden. We ate, caught up on our weekends and had a good time.

After dinner we walked over to Goodwill to see if we could find some things for our Halloween costumes (which Dale did). While walking back to our cars, I said it. Yes, I said the words I never expected to say. I said, "Who wants to check out Yogurtland?"

Sandy and Dale were strong and resisted, but after a little arm twisting I convinced them to join me in my unfaithful, sinful ways. I told them Yogurtland was closer and from what I heard the prices were lower than Smart Cow Yogurt Bar. I can be very convincing when I want (and slightly whiny). In what I assume was an effort to shut me up, they gave in and we were off to the forbidden Yogurtland in Arvada, CO.

We arrived to find ample parking and a fun, modern decorated store full of happy yogurt eaters. We quickly grabbed our cups and dove heard first into our infidelity. We were already in the store and there was no turning back. We selected our frozen yogurts, topped them off with toppings, paid and found our seats.

Sandy was the first to say what we were all thinking. She said, "I feel like I'm cheating." She was spot on. We were cheating. We were cheating on a business that had become a good friend to us. A place that had become our casual meeting place, our Central Perk if you would. A place that not only sold yummy frozen yogurt, but also gave back to the community.

We sat and talked through the pros and cons between Smart Cow Yogurt Bar and Yogurtland. Here is my summary:

Parking - Yogurtland had ample parking, while parking is typcially crowded by Smart Cow. However, we have never not found a parking spot at Smart Cow and oddly no matter how crowded, Sandy and Steve always seem to luck out and get a front row space. We decided this presented no advantage or disadvantage to either business. Tie

Design - Both businesses had very clean, modern designs that were appealing to the eye. This was another draw. Tie

Cleanliness - Smart Cow keeps a cleaner store. Yogurtland had yogurt all over the bottom of their machines and toppings were all over the floor. Smart Cow always has someone on the floor cleaning, which makes a huge difference as I hate when the toppings get mixed together. However, Yogurtland did have a hand sanitizer station at the beginning of their yogurt machines, which Dale thoroughly appreciated. It was a nice touch and a win for Yogurtland, but it was not enough to account for the other messes. Win - Smart Cow

Flavors - Both businesses seemed to have the same number of yogurt flavors and a similar number of toppings. Yogurtland seemed to have more fruit and tart flavors, which Dale appreciated and overall the flavors seemed slightly richer than Smart Cow, so in this category Yogurtland took a slight edge but barely. Win - Yogurtland

Price - It is obvious at $.30 per ounce at Yogurtland versus $.39 per ounce at Smart Cow that Yogurtland is the more affordable choice, but Smart Cow since opening has donated over $5,000 to local schools. We appreciated the community aspect of Smart Cow and although we all like to save a buck when we can did respect the philanthropy of Smart Cow. We wished perhaps Smart Cow could do a lower regular price and then raise their price by $.10 on their charity nights. But we felt no matter what, we preferred a business that gave back...so the hell with the $.09 difference. Even though Yogurtland was a bit more affordable, we preferred the attitude of Smart Cow to give back. Win - Smart Cow

Cups/Utensils - Yogurtland did win by offering three cup size options and biodegradable spoons over Smart Cow. The smaller cup options are great for people with kids and the spoons help us all long-term. Win - Yogurtland

Health - Yogurtland displays the calories per ounce with ever flavor of yogurt and topping, which is huge for those of us trying to eat healthier. I do not see this at Smart Cow and I think they only have this in a brochure and on their website in grams, which does not help when you sell in ounces. Win - Yogurtland

Seating -
In terms of seating, we sat outdoors, so I could not compare overall seating, but Smart Cow wins for cooler and more comfortable outdoor seats than Yogurtland. Adirondack chairs are much better than what appeared to be $5.00 outdoor patio chairs. Step it up Yogurtland.  Win - Smart Cow

Outdoor Area
- However, a real negative to Yogurtland was the outdoor area. Although bigger than Smart Cow, it felt sort of get seedy and dark outside, plus there were a bunches of rowdy teens constantly hanging out and driving by. Yogurtland felt like it was going to be the teen hangout, while Smart Cow feels much more family friendly. This was a huge disadvantage for Yogurtland. Win - Smart Cow

Customer Service - Overall, Smart Cow was also a lot friendlier. Every time we go in the staff at Smart Cow is great...while Yogurtland we barely had anyone talk to us other then to tell us our total charge. It felt like a chain and just a business in many ways, while Smart Cow feels like neighbors running a business, who care about their customers. Win - Smart Cow

So all in all, I think Yogurtland has a slight edge when it came to flavors, lower pricing and displaying the calories, with a few nice things like the hand sanitizer, cup options and spoons, but:
Smart Cow Yogurt Bar is by far cleaner, more family friendly and has top notch service that I feel outweighs saving a few cents per ounce. Add in their willingness and dedication to our community and Smart Cow remains my favorite frozen yogurt destination.
So although I cheated, I think this momentary indiscretion made me love Smart Cow Yogurt Bar just that much more because sometimes you can only appreciate what you have until you see what else is out there.

Thanks Smart Cow Yogurt Bar and keep ito the great work!

Everyone should read this post from the woman on the Detroit flight that was detained

This is written from the woman on the Denver to Detroit flight on 09/11/11. It is from her blog and is pretty powerful. In case you do not know the story here is also the link to the news story on from the Associated Press.

Some real Shock and Awe: Racially profiled and cuffed in Detroit
Silly me. I thought flying on 9/11 would be easy. I figured most people would choose not to fly that day so lines would be short, planes would be lightly filled and though security might be ratcheted up, we’d all feel safer knowing we had come a long way since that dreadful Tuesday morning 10 years ago.
But then armed officers stormed my plane, threw me in handcuffs and locked me up.
My flight from Denver landed in Detroit on time. I sent a text message to my husband to let him know we had landed and I would be home by dinner. The plane stopped on the tarmac, seemingly waiting to have the gate cleared. We waited. I played on my phone, checking Facebook, scrolling through my Twitter feed. After a while of sitting there, I decided to call my husband to tell him the plane was being delayed and I would call him when I got off the plane.
Just as I hung up the phone, the captain came over the loudspeaker and announced that the airport authorities wanted to move the airplane to a different part of the airport. Must be a blocked gate or something, I thought. But then he said: Everyone remain in your seats or there will be consequences. Sounded serious. I looked out the window and saw a squadron of police cars following the plane, lights flashing. I turned to my neighbor, who happened to be an Indian man, in wonderment. What is going on? Others on the plane were remarking at the police as well. Getting a little uneasy, I decided the best thing for me to do was to tweet about the experience. If the plane was going to blow up, at least there’d be some record on my part.

Eyes playing tricks on me

Don't you hate when your eyes play tricks on you? Last night, I woke up around 3:00 AM and could have sworn there was someone standing in the doorway of our bedroom.

Of course once I really focused it was just shadows and not a crazed killer, but it still got my heart racing and made me feel like I was 5 years old again having a nightmare. Thankfully I did not wake up Dale or Zoe with my foolishness.

Update on the schnauzers

In a news update, Dale did find the owners of the two schnauzers thar he rescued while running down the street Sunday night. Turns out the dogs were named Oscar and Jackson and the owners were moving all day Sunday between their current and new house. They left their current house at 6:00 PM and returned at 10:00 PM to find no dogs. It turns out someone helping them move accidentally left a door open.

They freaked out when they found their dogs missing and searched Monday night for hours. Dale and I had stopped driving around looking for someone searching around 9:30 PM. The owners called Animal Control Monday morning and who gave them Dale's cell. Dale had called Animal Control and the Police Sunday night.

The owners came to our house and Dale said the dogs were very happy to see then. One of the dogs was 12 and the other was 5. They are primarily house dogs, so the owners were panicked not knowing how they would do with cars and having such dark fur with no collars on at night. They were very fortunate Dale came along and took the time to round up the dogs. It turns out Dale found the dogs only yards from their home, so they had not been out long.

It is good the story had a happy ending and that we have people like Dale in this world.

Why did you work this weekend?

So what was I doing in Boston the past three days? Working. I know, you are thinking you worked weekend, right? Yes. I was at meetings Friday through Sunday. My company, Bridgeline Digital's new fiscal year starts in October and our Executive Committee, which I am included, came together to review our business plans for the up-coming year.

It was a great meeting and I have to admire my CEO, Thomas Massie as he brings together his team to not only plan for the next year, but also set the top initiatives of the entire company for the next year. As a group, we spent 1/2 of Saturday having open discussions as a group with Thomas on what we felt should be the top 10 or so things, as a company, we would focus in fiscal 2012. It is great because it allows us as leaders to help 1) shape the direction of our company and 2) have tangible initiatives and measurable goals for the next year for ourselves, our teams and our peers. The Executive Committee is 100% transparent with these initiatives throughout the entire company. It ensures we are not only 1) focused, but 2) focused on the same things. With seven separate offices and numerous departments at corporate, it can be easy for inconsistencies to arise and I feel this meeting kicks the year off unified and focused. Our entire company knows what is important and the priority for 2012.

Every time we meet throughout 2012 we will review and access if our actions, our behaviors and the decisions we have been making align to the top initiatives we set this weekend. We have done this for the past few years and I feel it is an excellent way to run a business.

Beyond setting the top initiatives for the company, each department (marketing, human resources, etc) and office, like my office in Denver, present our indivdual business plans for 2012, that include our financial plans, goals and risks. Before coming to this meeting, I spent days with my team creating Denver's plan. It helps my team be accountable for the next year as they helped to build the plan for the year. By each office/department presenting their plan, it also makes us accountable to each other as we know know every office/department's financial plan, goals and risks. Each individual office/department's success is critical to our company's success. No one department or office can be successful alone. We are a team, so we all have to drive each other to success.

I love that we build our plans from the bottom up with everyone across the company having input into their office/department's plan, which leads to our company plan. It creates buy-in from all levels, as everyone at Bridgeline Digital built the plan. I love the transparency, collaboration and accountability from this process. You would be surprised on how different this is from other company's where all planning is top down and you are handed your plan for this year. At Bridgeline Digital it is the exact opposite and this is very refreshing and exciting.

I am happy to report that this weekend over we finalized all the business plans and in mid-October we will have a 2012 kick-off meeting with the top leaders of the company, where the Executive Committee will present the final plans and top initiatives for 2012.

I will admit it was not all work, as this weekend was also a great for executive team building as we also went to dinner each night and socialized as a team. It is nice to catch up with everyone and get to know the newer members of the team better. I work with some of the smartest, hardest working and most passionate people in the business...so it is hard to not get energized by this group.

So was I sad I spent three beautiful autumn days in a hotel conference room in Boston, while everyone was outside having a great time? No. The long term rewards of this small sacrifice as countless, so I really do not mind. With that said, Bridgeline Digital Denver is going to kick ass in 2012 and have a great year!

Two found dogs

Dale found two grey schnauzers along the road near our house at 86th Parkway and Kipling tonight, on his way to pick me up from the airport. They have no collars but a definitely well-groomed and sweet dogs...so it seems likely they belong to someone. We went to an emergency animal clinic and neither dog has a microchip. We notified the police and animal control in case their owners are looking for them. We drove around the area where Dale found the dogs for an hour hoping to find someone out looking for them, but no luck. We stopped and asked every person walking or getting out of a car if they knew of anyone who owned two schnauzers but had no luck. I guess they will be spending the night with us and we will try to find their owners tomorrow. If anyone knows of someone in Arvada, who lost two dogs tonight, let me know.

Random Airplane Thought #3 - Clue

The guy in the seat across the aisle from me is watching the movie Clue on his laptop with his son. I am jealous asI love the movie Clue. His son seems kind of whiny, so not as jealous on that part.

Random Airplane Thought #2 - Pod People

I find people who bring no entertainment on a four hour flight interesting. They have no book, no iPod, no magazine and do not even watch the movie or sleep. They just sit and stare forward for four straight hours. It is like they are pod people. It is so weird to me as I need to entertain myself.

Random Airplane Thought #1- Kung Fu Panda

I tried watching Kung Fu Panda 2, which was the in-flight movie on my return flight to Denver from Boston, however having not watched Kung Fu Panda 1 the plot proved too difficult to follow so I gave up. Just kidding...I did try watching it as I love cartoons but I could just not get into it. I was hoping for a better movie on the flight.

Never forget

I watched some of a 9/11 documentary this morning on television. To this day as I watch the footage of the second plane going into the Tower, it still seems so unreal. It feels like a specific effect for a movie, but sadly we all know it is not. It was hard to watch the special and not feel extremely emotional. Watching the horror and loss followed by the heroism and unity brings up so many emotions. No matter what anyone says about America, one thing will always ring true...in a crisis, Americans band together. We forget our politics, we forget our differences and we unify. I personally wish that unity did not have to come from so much loss...but I guess that is just reality.

For all those who lost their lives on 9/11, I will never forget you. For your friends, family and loved ones left behind, I am sorry for the hardship you have faced. For all those police officers, fire fighters and other recovery workers of 9/11, I salute your dedication and efforts.

And to everyone else, I hope you take time today to remember and put what matters most into perspective. We all get caught up in the stresses of our daily lives, I am just as guilty on this, but next time you have what you feel is a bad day, try to remember days like 09/11/2001 are truly bad days and everything else is just nuisances and noise.

Never forget.

Boston in autumn

There is something magical about a beautiful, autumn day in Boston. I snapped these facing my hotel in Boston. Incredible.

Remembering 9/11

I saw them raising this giant flag today to honor the anniversary of 9/11 outside my hotel in Boston. It was stunningly beautiful and inspiring to witness.

Boston Harbor

The view of the Boston Harbor from my hotel is gorgeous. I miss the ocean.

Random thoughts I had tonight

Tonight I posted a bunch of blog posts I wrote on the airplane that were random thoughts that popped in my head on the five hour flight.

For those of you who choose to read these posts, I recommend starting with Random Airplane Thought #1 because I mention things in later posts from earlier posts. I will also warn you that some thoughts are more interesting than others.

For those of you who choose not to read these posts, I can understand...there are a lot of them.

Later!

Random Airplane Thought #20 - Hunter

Hey look it's Hunter, the kid who was terrorizing gate #25 earlier and shocker he is screaming. His Mom just dragged him into the bathroom. Fun times. I actually forgot all about him until I heard a kid yelling. I feel bad for the people who got stuck next to the demon child. I am sure everyone in the back of the plane knows his name. he just left the bathroom and is hitting every seat as he moves down the aisle. The Mom doesn't even seem to care, plus her shirt is covered in water...so I guess the bathroom visit went well. Poor woman.

Well, folks...we are about to start our descent to Boston. I will be grabbing a cab and heading to my hotel. For any of you who read all of these posts from the plane...you are true friends.

Happy flying!

Random Airplane Thought #19 - Five

Ms. Sushi sure likes her wine. She had five of those little bottles this flight. Is there a limit? Apparently not.

Random Airplane Thought #18 - Glee

I am listening to music from the TV show Glee on my iPod. I know it is a cheesy show at times, but I love it. It makes me happy. I love all things musicals...so Glee is perfect for me. I am a gleek. I am glad it is starting back up in a few weeks.

In other news we are 170 miles from Boston....so about 45 minutes until we touch down. Thank goodness.

Random Airplane Thought #17 - Pan Am

About an hour to go in this marathon let's-cross-Canada-to-get-to-Boston flight. I played Sudoku on iPad for a bit. I won each time. Go Tom! They are now playing some TV show called Suits on the in-flight entertainment. I have ever heard of it. The guy next to me is being an armrest hog...but he is in a middle seat, so I guess that is warranted. I would be doing the same if I were him. My back is a bit achy from sitting so long between the airport and airplane. I should have walked around more at the airport. I am listening to Valerie by Amy Winehouse. I love this song. It is a shame she wasted her life. They keep showing commercials for Pan Am on the TV. Flying seemed so much more elegant and almost regal back then. There were no sweatpants and cattle calls back then. Flying was an event...now it is a means. The flight attendants in the commercials seem so much happier than my flight crew today. Maybe they should watch the show to get some pointers...like when someone says thank you, you are supposed to say that you're welcome. However, they allowed smoking on flights back then which must have completely sucked. Yuck.

Random Airplane Thought #16 - Packaging

The guy next to me on the flight just bought the United Airlines tapas snack pack box. The amount of packaging involved in that product is horrifying. 10% food; 90% packaging. Shameful and wasteful. When will we start reducing wasteful packaging in this country?

Random Airplane Thought #15 - 9/11

I am scheduled to fly out of Boston this Sunday, which is 9/11/11 and ten years since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. I am not sure how I feel about flying that day. I imagine it will be just like any other day externally but internally I imagine many will feel uncomfortable, sad and/or anxiety that day. It is a day that changed our country forever. Plus, we have to acknowledge that crazies love anniversaries...so I imagine there is potential for something to happen that day. Also, will all the 9/11 specials on the air this week, it is hard to not feel a little anxiety this week. But it is what it is, right?

It did get me thinking about the days following 9/11 and how unified we were as a country. For the first time in my lifetime, we felt like one nation through and through. It is sad ten years later we are so divided. It is sad we are a country that feels broken. We are in debt and so many Americans are suffering. I wish we could find that unity again with such tragedy and fix America. We are a great country and need to start showing it.

Random Airplane Thought #14 - Bored

This feels like a very long flight. I read my Fast Company magazine, but am not in the mood to read my book, the Solitude of Prime. I am 1/2 way through the book, but it is a bit of a downer. I need to finish it for Book Club next week though...so hopefully I will want to be depressed on the flight back home on Sunday. I am sitting here a bit bored. Ms. Sushi and her husband, Anti-Leg Bump are not doing anything interesting and I have to assume the bitch in front of me fell asleep as she stopped moving her seat. Thank goodness I at least have my music on my iPod to give me something interesting.

Random Airplane Thought #13 - Canada

Due to weather our flight is being diverted through Canada, so it will take us an extra hour to get to Boston. I hope they come down the aisles checking passports. Ms. Sushi in my row told her boyfriend/husband this is exciting as she has never been Canada before. Since we are not landing (or I hope we do not need to land), she still will have never been to Canada. I am also guessing they are married as they do not seem to like each other very much and to me that is the first sign of marriage. So I will be arriving Boston three hours later than I originally expected - boo!

Random Airplane Thought #12 - Head Bobbers

I like watching people who fall asleep with their mouths open on the plane. It is like watching a bass fish. I also like watching the head bobber. They are the people whose head falls forward while they sleep and just when it seems like their head may disconnect from neck, they wake up for a split second and sit back up. They fall back to sleep, start head bobbing again and the cycle repeats itself over and over. I know I fall asleep with my mouth open, my head bobs and I have even woken up with drool on my face...and I am sure others have watched me and laughed on the inside.

Random Airplane Thought #11 - Ronnie Spector

I am listening to Girl from the Ghetto by Ronnie Spector on my iPod. I love this song. Ronnie was in a girl group in the 60s and was married to super-freak (and convicted murderer) record producer Phil Spector. He physically and mentally abused her. She eventually divorced him and this is her "fuck you Phil" song. It kicks ass, Ronnie's voice is stellar and it is the ultimate "I survived" song. If you have not heard it, check it out. I discovered the song from my car, Elvira. True story! When we test drive her we found a homemade dance re-mix CD in the stereo (we it still lives 5 years later) and track #2 was this song. I loved the song so much Dale bought me the car, so I could keep the CD. I also loved the car too.

Random Airplane Thought #10 - Next in Line

The line for the bathroom on the airplane is currently 8 people deep. Why? Someone has been in there for what feels like 20 minutes. I would NOT want to be the next person in line. Stinky!

Random Airplane Thought #9 - Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton's song 9 to 5 just came up on my iPod. I know it sounds incredibly get I have this on a playlist, but I dare you to listen to this song and not feel happier. It just makes you want to tap your fingers along to the typewriter sounds.

Random Airplane Thought #8 - Bathroom Lines

There is something demeaning to me standing in line for an airplane restroom. I am two rows from the restroom and galley, so I get to see everyone lined up post beverage service to pee. It always seems very awkward to stand in any line to go to the bathroom. I am not sure why...just how I feel. I think it is why I would rather explode than wait in that line.

Random Airplane Thought #7 - Grouchy Flight Attendant

I hate unfriendly flight attendants. We just had the second beverage service. I said please when I ordered. I said a genuine thank you when I received my Minute Maid cranberry apple cocktail (made with 3 juices from concentrate). I even made eye contact and I think I even smiled. Yet...I got nothing from the grouchy Flight Attendant. No smile. No you're welcome. I hate that. She probably feels her job is thankless...but maybe she could try to recognize a thanks. I wish I was one of those people who made a scene and loudly said, "I said thank you!" But that is not me. I am one of those people who gets angry inside, secretly wishes we hit turbulence and the coffee spills on her. That is who I am.

Other updates: This Minute Maid cranberry apple cocktail (made with 3 juices from concentrate) is delicious. The bitch in front of me continues to keep adjusting her seat. I am also wishing bad things happen to her...perhaps a paper cut.

Random Airplane Thought #6 - The Leg Bump

Let's be realistic...the legroom and seat space on airplanes...even in economy plus is tight. Add in the fact that I am what the Moms would call husky or big-boned and it is even tighter. A few minutes ago, I bumped legs with the guy next to me (Sushi's husband or boyfriend I assume). It was an accident, but based on his reaction you'd think I reached over and stuck my hands down his pants (I was saving that for the second half of the flight). He is now practically sitting on his wife's lap. For goodness sake it is a leg. It isn't like my dick brushed your leg. I get it...you are straight. I assumed it from your Budweiser baseball cap and sushi eating wife/girlfriend. Besides you are not pretty and I only the accidental leg bump on cute guys.

Random Airplane Thought #5 - Pirates

The in-flight movie is Pirates of the Caribbean #8: On Stranger Tides. Okay, it is only actually the fourth installment of the Pirate series...but it seems like eight. This series ran its' course. The first one rocked...but they phone it in on the second and third. I cannot be bothered watching #4 again. I already saw it with Dale as he loves the Pirate movies (and Johnny Depp I suspect). I will admit it was better than two or three, but still not as good as the first and not what I would call necessary. I'd rather listen to my iPod and write random blog posts.

Random Airplane Thought #4 - Sushi

Who the hell brings sushi onto an airplane? The woman in my row. Weird. She even has chop sticks. Fancy. I brought a Quiznos sandwich...I feel so white trash now.

Random Airplane Thought #3 - Aisle vs. Window

There are two types of people in this world - 1) those who prefer the window seat and 2) those who prefer the aisle seat on a plane. I tend to be a window seat person as I rarely ever get up to use the bathroom and when I sit in the aisle seat, the two people next to me tend to always have bladders the size of acorns and need to get up six hundred times to pee on a flight. I also like to look out the window.

Side note: The bitch in front of me has put her seat back and up again four times now. Make up your mind crazy! Your constant moving is pissing me off.

Okay, back to blogging...sorry about that. The only time I opt for an aisle seat is when I travel with Dale. We both hate the middle seat, so we pick aisle seats across from each other and then look at each other loving over the beverage cart.

I guess there are really three types of people...there are those crazy ass people who prefer a middle seat. I assume these people are insane, were not loved my their mothers and are talkers that feel the middle seat allows them to double the victims they have to chat endlessly about their love of sewing. However, this is just my assumption...I have no proof. If you are one of these people please email me to let me know if I am right and I am sorry that your mother did not love you.

Random Airplane Thought #2 - Beverage Service

Does everyone have a particular drink they always order with in-flight beverage service? Is it something you rarely drink on land, like me? I tend to order cranberry juice when I fly...yet I rarely ever order a cranberry when in a restaurant and only buy it at the grocery store a few times a year. I am not sure how this habit developed, but as they say old habits die hard. Here I am on my flight from Denver to Boston drinking my cranberry juice. Actually it is a cran-apple since the good people at United Airlines do not carry straight cranberry. They cut it with apple juice...otherwise we'd go crazy I'd assume. I also only drink ginger ale when I am sick because my Mom always gave me ginger ale when I was sick...so now I mentally associate it as being sick.

Does anyone else have something similar?

Random Airplane Thought #1 - Jennifer Anniston

It seems like every magazine everyone is reading on this flight features Jennifer Anniston on the cover. Why is America so fascinated with Jennifer Anniston's personal life? I always find America's obsession with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie odd too. My God, if they could get a photo of Brad, Angelina and Jennifer in a three-way, I think America would explode. If I were those three, I would stage a fake sex tape just for fun.

On the plus side, I bet Jennifer Anniston does not even own a camera. With all the paparazzi following her constantly for People, Enquirer and InTouch her whole life is already captured on film. How lucky! She probably saved $299 on a nice Nikon camera not to mention all the time downloading photos I have to do.

Hope for the best

It is interesting to watch how different travelers handle flight delays. We are delayed leaving Denver due to weather on the East Coast and this woman told the United Airlines woman working the counter, "This is completely unacceptable. I don't know why we can't get going and hope for the best once we get closer to Boston." No shit. Yeah, let's all just hope real hard we have a safe place to land. I love it. The woman from United Airlines explained that it does not work that way and the woman replied, "Well, that is what wrong with this industry...too many rules."

This man asked the woman from United Airlines if he was going to be compensated for the delay and the woman said no because it was weather related. The man said, "If you do not control the weather, what do you control?" The woman from United Airlines said, "Our planes. Oh and our employees." the man walked away.

Too funny.

Delay

It could not be a day of travel for me without a flight delay. Apparently weather on the East Coast is delaying us from heading to Boston. I am a very unlucky traveler, but nobody can control the weather right? Plus with so many on the East Coast facing flooding it seems wrong to complain about a few hours of delay at an airport.

Far from Hunter

I am at the airport waiting for my Boston flight. There is a 3 year old-ish demon child named Hunter running around screaming, crying, yelling and basically annoying the shit out of everyone. Hunter's Mom has said, "Hunter, no!" at least 3,000 times in the past 30 minutes. Hunter's Dad seems to pretend Hunter does not exist. Now this is not the good part of the story.

While sitting and waiting, the woman next to me got up, went over to Hunter's Mom and said, "I am in row 11. What row are you?" With a confused look, Hunter's Mom said, "Row 24." The woman said, "Oh good." and went back to sitting next to me. Everyone around smiled or laughed. Well, except Hunter's Dad, who finally told Hunter to settle down. This was too damn funny. Thankfully I am in row 10 so I too will be far from Hunter.

Somewhere in between

I am in weird mood today. I am not happy. I am not sad. I am just somewhere in between. It is a definite case of the blahs. When you add in that is the Tuesday after a holiday, it is cloudy and I have to travel this week...you probably understand. I get my haircut tonight...maybe that will cheer me up.

I am in a Halloween mood

Being the planner that I am, Dale and I met with our friends Sandy and Steve Stubbendick this afternoon to finalize plans for our Halloween party on October 15, 2011. We discussed alcohol, food, decorations, music, the costume contest/prizes, set-up and take-down. There is a lot that goes into a party for 100 - 150 people. Plus we also need our own costumes.

We also planned some additional Halloween activities:

  • Haunted House night with friends for Saturday, October 8, 2011
  • Zombie Crawl with friends for Saturday, October 22, 2011
  • Rocky Horror Picture Show with friends for Friday, October 29, 2011
I also sent out an Evite for Dale and my Christmas party in December, planned the November Couple's Game Night of bowling, made our plans for Thanksgiving and even saved the date for a brunch in October and a dinner in November. The next few months are going to be packed...but it is great because it is all about our friends and you can't do any better than that, right?

That is quite a bit of planning for one-day.
